Is Rewritely really free?
Yes. Rewritely is free to download and use — no account, no credit card, no subscription. It includes a free tier of 30 AI rewrites per day with no API key required. If you want unlimited rewrites, you can plug in your own Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini API key at any time.
Do I need an API key to use Rewritely?
No. Rewritely works out of the box with a built-in free tier (30 rewrites per day) that needs no API key, no account, and no configuration. Bringing your own API key is optional — it unlocks unlimited rewrites and lets you choose Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. Rewritely has no backend that stores your text. With your own API key, your selected text goes directly from your device to your AI provider. On the free tier, a small pass-through relay forwards your request to the AI and streams the answer back without ever storing your text. Your rewrite history is kept only locally on your device and you can clear it anytime.
Which apps does Rewritely work in?
Rewritely works system-wide in virtually any app where you can select text: Slack, Gmail, WhatsApp Web, Outlook, Microsoft Teams, Notion, browsers, native apps, and more. Select the text, press the hotkey, and the rewrite panel appears next to your cursor.
Why does macOS ask for the Accessibility permission?
macOS requires the Accessibility permission for any app that reads the current text selection or pastes text on your behalf. Rewritely uses it only to grab the text you selected and to paste your chosen rewrite back in place — nothing else.
Why does Windows SmartScreen warn me when installing?
The Windows installer is not yet code-signed with an EV certificate, so SmartScreen shows a caution screen for new publishers. The installer is safe — click More info and then Run anyway to install. The macOS version is fully signed and notarized by Apple.
